35% of Lithuanians Are Connected to Social Networks, Facebook Is the Most Popular

Roughly 60% of Lithuania's Internet users are members of different social networs online, which make up to 35% of the country's entire population, a survey by a market research company, SIC Gallup Media/INR has revealed.

The company has surveyed 1,596 Lithuanians aged 15-74 during June to August this year.

According to the survey data,  the majority of the respondents use social networks to communicte with their friends, family members and colleagues at work. Every second user joins social networks to contact their friends and associates. 45% of the respondents comment on their friends' profiles. 13% employ social networks to promote their product, service, company and other commercial activity. And only one in ten engage in communication with the people they don't know.

The survey has disclosed a different behaviour pattern between the social network users in urban and rural areas. People in the countryside more actively go to the networks in search of new acquaintances and more eagerly interact with strangers.

Meanwhile, the urban population prefer to communicate with a narrow circle of closest friends, although they more often comment on social issues. They also more often subscribe to the newsgroups and express opinions on various products, services and events. Urban people more eagerly than rural residents share news about themselves.

The majority of social network users in Lithuania access their personal accounts daily. 25% of them do it several times a day. Most active users, as a rule, live in large urban areas. Rural people see no need in accessing their accounts regularly and are therefore less active.

Facebook.com and one.lt are the most frequently visited social networks in Lithuania, followed by klase.lt, netlog.com, and draugas.lt.
