Lithuanian Ambassador to Georgia Jonas Paslauskas today met with the academic community of Tbilisi State University. The event was dedicated to the seventh anniversary of Lithuania’s membership to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
The ambassador also visited NATO corner at the premises of the university, and gave a lecture on NATO to the students.
The event was attended by Georgia’s Deputy State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Elene Khoshtaria, Rector of Tbilisi State University Alexander Kvitashvili, Lithuania's Defence Attaché to Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan LtCol. Virginijus Vilkelis, and students of the Faculty of Law.
The ambassador discussed the goals, objectives, and key operation principles of the Alliance, presented the conclusions of the NATO summit in Lisbon, and highlighted the key security challenges faced by Lithuania and NATO in the 21st century.
"Today is already seven years that Lithuania belongs to NATO family and has security guarantees from the Alliance. But still we have to deal with such new challenges as how to ensure performance in the face of ongoing financial pressures," said the ambassador.
The ambassador stressed that Georgia is on the right track and praised the students for their active interest in NATO issues.
"It took a decade for Lithuania to complete its road to NATO. Georgia also has to be patient and continue reforms. The NATO Summit in Lisbon last year has repeated the Bucharest language of 2008 – namely, that Georgia will be a NATO member. Lithuania had never had such a straightforward promise," noted Paslauskas.
From 1 of January this year, Lithuanian Embassy in Georgia acts as the NATO Contact Point Embassy. To disseminate information about NATO is among its key priorities.
