A Commemorative Plaque to Petras Vileišis Unveiled in the Historical Part of Tbilisi

A commemorative plaque to a prominent member of the Lithuanian national revival movement Petras Vileišis was unveiled in Tbilisi today. The plaque was unveiled on a renovated building at 138, David Aghmashenebeli Street, where Vileišis lived in 1918-1920.

Speaker of Georgian Parliament David Bakradze, as well as Deputy Speaker of Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas) Česlovas Stankevičius, attended the ceremony.

Among other guests also were: Member of European Parliament Professor Vytautas Landsbergis, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of Lithuanian Seimas Emanuelis Zingeris, Members of Parliament from Georgia and Lithuania, as well as representatives of the Lithuanian community in Georgia.

“Petras Vileišis made an invaluable contribution to the Lithuanian national revival at the turn of the 20th century. The traces of his activities today are found not only in Lithuania, but also far beyond the national borders – for example, in this historical part of Tbilisi. This only confirms that Vileišis was truly an outstanding person,” Lithuanian Ambassador to Georgia Jonas Paslauskas said at the ceremony.

Vileišis is considered one of the founding fathers of the 19th century Lithuanian national revival movement. He not only contributed to preserving the Lithuanian printed word, but also promoted enterprise culture and the development of national economy in Lithuania.

Under his own initiative, Vileišis set up a workshop of agricultural implements and a publishing house in Vilnius and started publishing the first legal Lithuanian newspaper “Vilniaus žinios”. Vileišis sponsored all these activities using his personal funds.

The documents recently found in the Georgian National Archives show that in addition to being a prominent engineer, Vileišis was also a diplomat during his stay in Georgia: in 1918-1920 he worked at the Lithuanian diplomatic mission to the Caucasus as an adviser.

These documents were critical in establishing the exact place of Vileišis’s residence in Tbilisi.

Unveiling of a commemorative plaque to Vileišis in the capital of Georgia was arranged by the Embassy of Lithuania with the assistance of the Georgian authorities.
