Ambassador D. Vitkauskas welcomed the opening of another EU Twinning project involving Lithuania
On September 9, Ambassador D. Vitkauskas participated in the official opening event of the EU Twinning Program project "Strengthening the national disease surveillance system in Georgia through the improvement of epidemiological and molecular (genomic) surveillance". In his welcoming speech, the Ambassador noted that EU Twinning projects play a crucial role in helping EU candidate countries align their policies and practices with EU standards and best practices. Lithuania is ready to share its experience and knowledge with the institutions of Georgia, hoping that Georgia sincerely commits to linking its future with the European Union. Lithuania is one of the leading EU countries in the Twinning program, since 2004, having implemented 140 twinning projects and more than 60 of them in Eastern Partnership countries, the latest project with Georgia is the 13th in which Lithuania participates - noted the Ambassador.
The main goal of the project is to strengthen genomic surveillance of infectious diseases in Georgia following EU recommendations and integrating EU legislation into the national legislation. Project implementer - Vilnius University Hospital Santara Clinic. Partners - Vilnius University, Center for Extreme Health Situations, National Public Health Care Laboratory and National Blood Center. The project is coordinated by the Central Project Management Agency. The expected end of the project is June 2026, its budget is up to EUR 1.2 million.
