Chairpersons of the Lithuanian – Georgian Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group meet in Tbilisi
On 1 October 2021, the delegation from the Seimas (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania, visiting Georgia to observe the Municipal Elections of 2 October 2021, held meetings at the Parliament of Georgia, accompanied by the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to Georgia, Mr. Andrius Kalindra. The delegation met with the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, Mr. Nikoloz Samkharadze and the Chairperson of the European Integration Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, Ms. Maka Botchorishvili, who is also the Chairperson of the Georgian-Lithuanian Parliamentary Friendship Group of the Parliament of Georgia.
During the meetings, the delegation discussed issues of inter-parliamentary cooperation between the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and the Parliament of Georgia, especially in light of the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit and the steps to be taken from both sides to facilitate tangible results on Georgia’s and the Associated Trio path towards European integration. Mr. Raimundas Lopata, Chairman of the Lithuanian-Georgian Parliamentary Friendship Group of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and his Georgian counterpart, Ms. Maka Botchorishvili focused on further developing friendship and cooperation between the two nations, with the positive role of the legislative structures in this process also underlined.
The upcoming visit of Ms. Maka Botchorishvili to Lithuania was also discussed, with both sides underlining the importance of continuous parliamentary contact and cooperation between Lithuania and Georgia, including on the reforms agenda.
Conversation also covered the topic of occupation and the situation on the occupied regions of Georgia, including human rights violations and recent developments of illegal nature, in the form of agreements between the Russian Federation and the de-facto authorities of the occupied regions of Georgia. Members of the Lithuanian delegation stated firm support to Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, pledging to voice the issues regarding occupation of Georgia’s regions on all relevant international forums.
During their visit to Georgia, the Lithuanian Parliament delegation will also meet representatives from non-governmental organizations, political parties and take part in the observation of the municipal elections that will take place on Saturday, 2 October 2021.
