Georgian TV Tells Tomas Šernas’s Story on the Eve of 20th Anniversary of January 1991 Events

On the eve of the 20th anniversary of January 1991 events, where 14 civilians were killed and hundreds wounded by Soviet troops, Georgian commercial television channel Imedi has presented a tragic story of Tomas Šernas and Lithuanian struggle for independence. The report was broadcast this Monday during prime time – in the 8PM news edition “Kronika.”

The program’s viewership varies at around 40 percent.

The three-minutes-long report features a story about the 1991 Medininkai tragedy, the heroism of Šernas and his family, as well as an interview with the only surviving witness to the Medininkai massacre.

Tomas Šernas with his family visited Georgia in late October last year. To see Mount Kazbegi was one of his long-cherished dreams.

The interview with Imedi was arranged by the Embassy of Lithuania to Georgia.

“We seek to promote Lithuania’s most recent history in Georgia, since over the last 20 years many of those important events have faded away – especially against the backdrop of Georgia’s complicated internal wars,” says Lithuanian Ambassador Jonas Paslauskas.

On January 13, the Embassy together with the Georgian leadership is also planning to lay a wreath at the Memorial of April 9 in Tbilisi, as well as set a symbolic fire in the Vilnius Square (Chonkadze Str.)

Last December the Parliament of Georgia adopted a resolution which called upon the international community to press Russia to cooperate with Lithuania in the investigation of January 1991 crimes.
