Lithuania and Germany Have Been Selected for an EU Twinning Project in Georgia

Lithuanian Standards Board, together with a German partner institution, will implement a European Union twinning project "Strengthening of the metrology and standardisation infrastructure in Georgia according to the best practice in the EU member states,” the EU Delegation in Tbilisi has announced. A nearly half-a-million euros EU-funded two-year project aims to modernize Georgia's metrology and standards infrastructure.

This EU twinning project is the first won by Lithuanian institutions in Georgia. Lithuania has been implementing other bilateral projects under the EU Twinning Program in Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Launched in 1998, the EU Twinning Program aims to help the recipient countries strengthen their administrative capacities. The program builds on the principle of cooperation between the public institutions of the beneficiary and the donor country.

In 1998-2008, 125 EU Twinning projects were implemented in Lithuania. Since 2004, when Lithuania joined the EU, Lithuanian institutions have been eligible to provide assistance to other countries through the EU Twinning Program. Lithuanian institutions have been selected to implement 16 EU Twinning projects by now.

The project in Georgia is already the fifth EU Twinning project that Lithuania wins in 2010.

Since September 15, 2009, the Development Cooperation and Democracy Promotion Department at Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been acting as the national coordinator of the EU Twinning Program.
