Lithuania-Georgia MFA Consultations Held in Vilnius

The first meeting of Lithuania-Georgia Commission on European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, established under the 2009 Lithuania-Georgia Partnership Charter, was held in Vilnius this Monday.   Deputy Foreign Minister Egidijus Meilūnas led the Lithuanian delegation and his counterpart on the Georgian side was Deputy Foreign Minister David Jalagania.

DFM Meilūnas reiterated Lithuania’s support to Georgia in EU-Georgia negotiations on Association Agreement. This agreement will establish the framework of EU-Georgia cooperation in such areas as foreign and security policy, economy, trade, transport, energy, environment protection, agriculture, education, health care and culture.

 

Currently the negotiations are advancing successfully and at full tilt, the Georgian side has informed. Eight out of 26 negotiating chapters have been preliminary closed.

 

Lithuanian and Georgian delegations also discussed Georgia’s preparedness to launch negotiations for a deep and comprehensive free trade agreement with the EU. This agreement will be at the heart of EU-Georgia Association Agreement and lead to a more stable, secure and mutually beneficial trade environment.

 

DFM Jalagania appreciated Lithuanian expert support to Georgia under the EU Technical Assistance and Information Exchange program (TAIEX) in implementing EU’s key recommendations for launching free trade negotiations.

 

DFM Meilūnas also reiterated Lithuania’s support to Georgia in her bid to join NATO and stressed the importance of successful implementation of the Annual National Program, which defines the basis of NATO-Georgia cooperation.

 

DFM Meilūnas noted that from 1 January 2011 the Lithuanian Embassy in Tbilisi will assume the role of NATO Contact Point Embassy in Georgia for a period of two years.

 

The delegations also approved an annual action plan for the implementation of the Lithuania-Georgia Charter on the European and Euro-Atlantic Integration. This document sets out the agenda of bilateral meetings and joint events for the next year.
