Lithuania is ready to take part in observing Georgia’s municipal elections

On August 24, 2021, the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to Georgia, Andrius Kalindra, met with the Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission, Giorgi Kalandarishvili.

Mr. Kalandarishvili provided the Ambassador with detailed information about the activities of the Georgian CEC in preparation to the elections, assuring of the strong efforts of the Commission to ensure a transparent and smooth electoral process despite the additional challenges caused by COVID-19. "The involvement of international partners in the electoral process, their observation, conclusions and recommendations are very important both for ensuring the trust in election results and for improving the electoral process in the future”, noted the Chairman of the CEC.

Ambassador Andrius Kalindra assured the chairman of Lithuania’s longstanding support of Georgia‘s sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence and Euro-Atlantic integration. Ensuring a transparent, open and credible electoral process is crucial for strengthening democracy. The Ambassador stated that Lithuania supports international election observation initiatives, including through contributing election observers in upcoming municipal elections that will take place on 2nd of October. The key role of the Central Electoral Commission was emphasized in order to ensure the credible conduct of the forthcoming municipal elections and in the implementation of the electoral reforms, which are enshrined in the EU-mediated agreement between political parties signed on April 19. "Public confidence in the electoral process remains a prerequisite for the further development of democratization in Georgia. Lithuania, together with the international community, is ready to continue to support these efforts" said Ambassador A. Kalindra.
