Lithuania Takes Over NATO Contact Point Embassy Functions In Georgia

From 1 January 2011, the Lithuanian Embassy to Georgia has taken over NATO Contact Point Embassy functions from her Latvian counterpart.

NATO and Georgia officials, as well as foreign diplomats, attended an official ceremony which was held on this occasion in Tbilisi yesterday.

"Over the next two years we will seek to help Georgia move closer towards NATO membership and the Georgian society – better understand the Alliance's goals and objectives," Lithuanian Ambassador Jonas Paslauskas said at the inauguration ceremony.

To disseminate information about NATO and to raise public awareness of its activities is one of the key functions of a NATO contact point embassy.

In 2011, Lithuanian diplomats plan to visit Georgian regions extensively and meet local residents across the whole country.

In addition, the Embassy is determined to work closely with the Georgian media and public institutions and assist them in the preparation and implementation of various NATO-Georgia cooperation initiatives.

Previously, Lithuania had implemented NATO Contact Point Embassy functions in Belarus and Moldova.

Lithuania’s new role as a NATO Contact Point Embassy in Georgia will last until the end of 2012.
