Lithuania won eleventh Twinning project in Georgia
European Union delegation in Tbilisi has informed last week that Lithuania as a junior partner has won EU’s Twinning project "Support for the development of a comprehensive road safety database and further improvement of road safety management in Georgia’’ together with Poland.
For two years, a team of experts from the Road Research Institute of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University and the Polish Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy and the Directorate-General for Roads and Highways will help to strengthen the road safety management system in Georgia under the EU-Georgia Association Agreement. Goal of the project is to improve the capacity of road safety policy-making at institutional level, as well as the quality and analytical methods for collecting accident data. The European Commission is providing EUR 1.3 million for the implementation of the project.
Lithuania has been implementing EU twinning projects in Georgia since 2007. This year, the eleventh project was won, a total value of all projects is EUR 13 million. In previous years, Lithuania has contributed to the strengthening of cybersecurity capabilities in Georgia, the creation of capacity of the civil service office for the implementation of the civil service reform, the strengthening of sustainable forest management, modernization of the telecommunications regulatory framework, the implementation of an independent energy market regulatory framework, the strengthening of metrology and standardization infrastructure, the establishment of a national blood center and other areas.
The EU Twinning Program, funded by the European Commission, supports cooperation between allied institutions in different countries, strengthens the administrative capacity of beneficiary countries and helps them implement the necessary reforms. Lithuania has been providing expert support to this EU program since 2004 and has won 124 EU Twinning project competitions. According to the European Commission, Lithuania has been in the top five of the most successful EU countries in the EU Twinning Program in recent years. Lithuania has won the most projects in the Eastern Partnership countries: Ukraine 13, Azerbaijan 13, Georgia -11, Moldova -11, Armenia -4, Belarus 4.
