LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER WILL VISIT GEORGIA
Foreign Minister Vygaudas Ušackas will pay an official visit to Georgia on October 1-2, 2009. This will be his second visit to Georgia in less than a year.
Minister Ušackas will meet Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, Speaker of Parliament Davit Bakradze and Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze. A meeting with the members of political opposition is also foreseen.
The minister will discuss political and economic cooperation with Georgia, as well as practical instruments of implementing Lithuanian-Georgian Charter on Partnership, signed in Vilnius on April 28, 2009. A concrete action plan will be elaborated providing a schedule of meetings between the representatives of Lithuania and Georgia in 2010.
Minister Ušackas will also meet the head of European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia Ambassador Hansjörg Haber and will make a field trip to the administrative boundary line with the Tskhinvali Region.
An exhibition “Road to Freedom” will be opened Thursday noon at the Parliament Square on the Rustaveli Avenue. Thursday evening the second Lithuanian Language Class for Georgians will be inaugurated at the Tbilisi City Hall.
This year Lithuania and Georgia celebrate the 15th anniversary since diplomatic relations had been established on September 22, 1994.
In 2008, trade turnover between Lithuania and Georgia was almost USD 35 million, making Lithuania one of the largest trade partners of Georgia in the European Union and the major destination for Georgian exports in the Baltic-Nordic region.
Lithuania actively supports Georgia’s territorial integrity and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. This year more than USD 300,000 will be spent on various development cooperation projects in Georgia.
