Lithuanian medics performed the first operation of retinopathy in Georgia

On the 21st of November in M. Iashvili Central Pediatric Hospital medics from Lithuania performed the first operation of retinopathy in Georgia.  

 

Doctors Rasa Bagdonienė and Rasa Sirtautienė are implementing the project “Prevention of blindness for retinopathy of premature newborns program in Georgia”.  

 

Modern eye surgery equipment, aimed to cure retinopathy of premature newborns, was provided by the Government of Japan. Lithuania is supporting the trainings of the medical staff.


On the 19th November, International Ophthalmology Conference was opened in Tbilisi, followed with the trainings in hospitals. During these seminars, one premature newborn was diagnosed with retinopathy. He was urgently operated – doctors saved his vision.


Retinopathy of premature newborns is a recently discovered ocular disease. It is one of the main causes of children blindness around the world.

 

In Lithuania such surgery was conducted for the first time in 1994. Until now more than 500 children maintained their vision because of proper treatment.


With the support of Japan and Lithuania, retinopathy of premature newborn will be treated in Georgia as well.
