Lithuanian projects evaluated during Khashuri international festival

Guests from five countries (Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Ukraine and Belarus gathered in Khashuri (Central Georgia) and participated in the international festival “Khashuri Golden autumn 2011). Mr. Antanas Čepononis, Mayor of Radviliškis region (Lithuania), and H.E. Jonas Paslauskas, Ambassador of Lithuania to Georgia, also participated in the event.

During an official ceremony one local resident and one foreign citizen became honorary citizens of Khashuri town. Mr. Sergo Kitiashvili, member of Parliament of Georgia, announced that ambassador J. Paslauskas had become a honorary citizen of Khashuri.

“It is a pleasure to become a honorary citizen of your town. I would like to note that first of all, it is the evaluation of the decisions and actions of the Government of Lithuania. This proves that our cooperation is necessary and meaningful, and friendship between Lithuanians and Georgians is constantly strengthening. Second, it is an obvious tribute to the work of the diplomats, who have worked in the Embassy of Lithuania” - said Ambassador J. Paslauskas.

In the spring a reconstructed public library opened in Khashuri. Later, in June, it hosted a NATO information corner together with the Embassy of Lithuania as a NATO contact point Embassy in Georgia. The delegation of the librarians from Šilute town (Lithuania) visited Khashuri in September. The students from Kaunas Technology University prepared thirteen architectural projects for the main square of the town – all of them were open for a public review at a special exhibition - residents of Khashuri chose their favorite project.

One of the priorities of the Lithuanian development cooperation and assistance to the democracy program is to facilitate the regional development. Moreover, Lithuania and Georgia has signed in 2009 the bilateral Charter on European and Euro-Atlantic cooperation and agreed to strengthen the relationships between the municipalities.

Lithuania has been providing the assistance to Georgia from 2005. Last year Embassy of Lithuania in Georgia supported 17 projects with an overall value of approximately 44 000 Euros.
