Local EU Statement on Venezuela's Nomination
The Delegation of the European Union issues the following statement in agreement with the Heads of Mission of the EU Member States in Georgia: “The EU fully supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia as recognised by international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, in line with the UN Charter and the Final Act of the Helsinki Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe.
Any recognition of the breakaway regions is in our view detrimental to stability and security in the Southern Caucasus, and it is in violation of international law such as UNSCR 1808 of 2008.
Recognition is also jeopardizing the ongoing international efforts to find a solution to the conflicts, in particular the Geneva International Discussions where the EU plays a leading role as co-chair together with the UN and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
We therefore want to express our strong regrets concerning Venezuela's decision to nominate an ambassador to Georgia's break-away region of Abkhazia and to consider introducing a visa free regime between Venezuela and the said region."
