Meeting of mixed Georgian and Abkhaz families
Sixteen mixed Georgian and Abkhaz families met on 21-22 September in Ganmuchuri village, 500 meters from the administrative border line with Abkhazia. The meeting was supported by the Embassy of Lithuania in Georgia. The event was attended by H.E. Jonas Paslauskas, ambassador of Lithuania to Georgia and representatives from European Union monitoring mission in Georgia (EUMM).
“This project is financed by the Embassy of Lithuania. Its goal is to help to restore broken relationships, to draw attention to the potential of the mixed families in solving ingrained problems. Communication between Abkhazians and Georgians is a key element in finding a peaceful solution to the conflict"- said Ambassador J. Paslauskas.
In the beginning of independence mixed Georgian and Abkhaz families constituted 41 percent of residents of region of Abkhazia. After the 1992-1993 civil war their relationship broke down. After the 2008 war between
Participants from Abkhazia noted that living conditions are getting more complicated: one cannot leave home without a passport, because Russian soldiers are always demanding for it, population is pressed to use Russian language, eleventh grade students in Gali are almost not speaking in Georgian.
This meeting was a part of project “Georgian-Abkhaz dialogue". The project is financed by the Embassy of Lithuanian from the development cooperation and assistance to the democracy program.
