Multinational exercise VIKING 2011 is over

On 14th April Ambassador of Lithuania Jonas Paslauskas together with other representatives of the diplomatic corps participated in the closing ceremony of the Multinational exercise VIKING 2011 in the Vaziani military base. The excercise was organized in the framework of NATO Partnership for Peace Programme.

The military training was conducted on the staff level. Representatives from the police and civilian organizations also participated in the trainings, as the main purpose of the training was to improve cooperation during peace support and crisis response operations.

“It is very important that Georgian soldiers are learning not only military affairs but also mechanisms of cooperation with civilian organizations. For me as a civilian, it was very important to see the humanitarian and civilian aspects in this exercise”, stated the Ambassador of Lithuania.

VIKING 2011 was conducted virtually through computer assisted simulation network. According to the scenario, the Georgian peacekeeping forces were operating to achieve peace and stability in an invented country “Bogaland”, in particular, in the island “Gotland’. Events and incidents were modeled on current conflict environments (Africa and Central Asia).

A total of 2200 participants, mostly militaries and civilians represented 24 nations. Main headquarter of the exercise was located in Sweden, and brigade level headquarters were based in Georgia, Austria, Germany, Ireland and Ukraine
