New eye surgery equipment presented in Iashvili Central pediatric hospital

An official presentation of new eye surgery equipment for the treatment of retinopathy of prematurely born babies took place at Iashvili Central Pediatric Hospital of Georgia. The treatment of this disease requires laser equipment, which up to this day has not been available in the whole South Caucasus.

This project was initiated by Lithuanian doctors from Vilnius University Hospital Santariškiu Klinikos and financed by the government of Japan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania from the Lithuanian Development cooperation program.

The event was attended by H.E. Jonas Paslauskas, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to Georgia, H.E. Masayoshi Kamohara, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Georgia, Mr. Irakli Giorgobiani, viceminister of Health, Labor and Social Affairs, medical staff and other officials.

“This project is important for three reasons. First, it aims to help children not only in Georgia but in the whole region. Second, this project demonstrates solidarity of international community and sincere wish to help Georgian people. Third, Japan has recently experienced a big tragedy itself, and we can only admire the willingness and efforts of Japanese government to continue helping others.” – said ambassador J. Paslauskas.

Modern eye surgery equipment was provided by the Government of Japan, while the eye disease specialists from Lithuania will provide training for the medical staff of Georgia. It is expected that about 100 children annually would directly benefit from this project.
