Renovated Movie Theater Opens in Georgian Resort Town of Kobuleti, Lithuania a Key Sponsor

A renovated movie theater, which has been closed for more than two decades, was re-opened today at the Georgian seaside resort of Kobuleti. This project has been made possible thanks to the financial support of Lithuanian Government, which granted 70,000 litas (20,000 euro) for reconstruction in 2009.

The money was used to repair the cinema’s roof, install new communications and purchase modern movie presentation equipment.

Inspired by the project’s results, the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara decided to allocate additional 200,000 litas (more than 50,000 euro) in the 2010 budget to complete reconstruction works.

"We believe that the cinema theater we open today will become an important cultural center for the local community. We also hope it will play an important role in promoting tourism development in this part of the Black Sea coast, especially during the off-season," said Lithuanian Ambassador Jonas Paslauskas at the opening ceremony.

"I am particularly pleased that the generous contribution by the Lithuanian people has helped to attract additional funding and advance this project to its final stage. This is the main objective of development cooperation policy," said Ambassador Paslauskas.

Lithuania sponsors development cooperation projects in Georgia since 2005, when she became a member of the European Union and joined the European aid and development policy framework.

Last year, Lithuania’s contribution to the projects in Georgia amounted to nearly 800,000 litas (230,000 euro).

Lithuanian NGO East European Studies Center coordinated reconstruction works at the Kobuleti movie theater.
