Russians and Georgians among Most Frequent Violators of Lithuanian Border
Among foreign citizens who sought to illegally cross Lithuanian border last year, Russian and Georgian citizens were the most frequent violators, State Border Guard Service of Lithuania (VSAT) has reported. In 2010, VSAT officials arrested 53 Russian, 51 Georgian and 20 Belarusian citizens who were attempting to cross the border illegally.
Also, 19 Armenian, 8 Vietnamese, 6 German, 7 Afghan, and 5 Moldovan citizens were detained.
However, the most frequent border violators last year were Lithuanian citizens – they made up 115 out of 301 person arrested.
The largest number of illegal crossing attempts was registered on the border with
299 border violators were detained by Lithuanian border guards in 2009.
Under the Criminal Code of Lithuania, a person who unlawfully attempts to cross the state border shall be sentenced to a fine or arrest, or imprisonment for at most two years.
