Social Democrats Lead in Lithuanian Municipal Elections, the Ruling Conservative Party Comes Second
The opposition Social Democratic party has slightly advanced their positions in the 2011 Lithuanian municipal elections, the preliminary data from 95% of the election precincts shows. Altogether, the Social Democrats gained 16.6% of votes, while the ruling Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party came second with 14.5%.
During the 2007 municipal elections, the Social Democrats collected 16.3% of the votes, and Homeland Union – 17.1%. However, four years ago the Christian Democrats participated in the elections with a separate list and won 5.1%, thus the overall approval rating for Homeland Union – Christian Democrats was 22.2%.
According to preliminary data, the Social Democratic Party may receive 326 mandates in the municipalities, and the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party – 248.
The Labor Party comes third with 9.99% of the total vote (164 mandates), followed by the party “Order and Justice,” which scored 8.6% (156 mandates).
The final official election results should be announced by March 6th.
