STATEMENT ON THE SO-CALLED “PARLIAMENTARY AND LOCAL ELECTIONS” IN ABKHAZIA, GEORGIA

9 March 2007, Vilnius

The Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania:

Having regard to the fact that “local and parliamentary elections” were held in Abkhazia, Georgia on 11 February and 4 March 2007;

Having regard to the Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union concerning the recent so-called "Parliamentary elections" in Abkhazia, Georgia, adopted by the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on 5 March 2007;

-           reiterates Lithuania’s firm support for the territorial integrity of Georgia,

-           notes that Abkhazia is an integral part of the Georgian territory in accordance with the principles of the international law and therefore does not recognise the legitimacy of the elections held on 4 March 2007,

-           notes that valid elections in this part of the Georgian territory can be held only when unrestricted, full and secure return of all refugees and internally-displaced people to Abkhazia is ensured and implemented,

-           encourages to look for a compromise in settling the conflict by diplomatic means,

-           notes that peaceful solution of the frozen conflict in Abkhazia would contribute to the strengthening of political stability, security and peace in the entire region of the South Caucasus,

-           supports the growing role of the European Union in the South Caucasus and further strengthening of the European Union’s contribution to settling frozen conflicts in the region.
