The Largest Project of Lithuanian Embassy to Georgia Completed

An “Open Library” was officially launched in Khashuri (Central Georgia) this Saturday, thus marking the completion of a three-year development cooperation project carried out by the Embassy of Lithuania.

The “Open Library” concept, developed by Khashuri Union of Libraries, provides for the creation of a new public space in the city, where residents can read a newspaper, check their e-mail, have a cup of coffee, and participate in cultural events during the entire summer season.

Within the three years the Embassy has allocated LTL56,000 (roughly EUR16,000) from its development cooperation program for the needs of the project. Almost the same amount of money was provided by the Khashuri Municipality and private Lithuanian companies ACC Lithuania, Minijos baldai, and Sweco Lithuania.

The funds were used for renovation of the façade and the front yard of the library, purchase of outdoor furniture and technical equipment, and installation of a computer class with a free-of-charge internet access. Week-long training courses were arranged for the staff of the library, during which they had an opportunity to visit libraries in five regions of Lithuania.

“Three years ago, when we picked up your call for help, we could not imagine that the outcome will be such a wide and successful cooperation,” Lithuanian Ambassador to Georgia Jonas Paslauskas said at the opening ceremony.

“Today if you ask me to show what development cooperation is, without hesitation I would bring you here to Khashuri,” noted the Ambassador.

The future plans of the library include the opening of a NATO Corner in mid-June and the receiving of a delegation from Fridrichas Bajoraitis Public Library of Šilutė Municipality in the autumn.

Lithuania launched its development cooperation program in Georgia in 2005. Last year, the Embassy implemented 17 projects with a total value of LTL153,000 (EUR44,000).
