The President: Lithuania continues to support Georgia’s euroatlantic aspirations
On September 23rd President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili in New York, where she is attending the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly. In the meeting, the two Presidents discussed the development of Lithuanian-Georgian relations and concrete opportunities for bilateral cooperation next year, when Lithuania takes over presidency of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
"Lithuania continues to support Georgia's territorial integrity and its aspiration to join the EU and NATO. Georgia's euro-integration and NATO membership prospects will undoubtedly depend on how well Georgia succeeds in doing its homework that must be done, especially as the country seeks to conclude a free trade agreement with the EU. Lithuania is willing to continue sharing its experience with Georgia in so far as Georgia wishes," the President said. This year, Lithuania has initiated a European project to help Georgia to get better prepared to receive technical assistance from the EU, is helping Georgia strengthen its administrative capacities in internal affairs, agriculture, environment, health-care and other areas, and is providing support to Georgian people who have suffered from the war. Lithuania has also initiated the establishment of NATO Trust Fund to help Georgia dispose of explosives and ensure medical rehabilitation, supported by many other member countries of the Alliance.
