Užupis Constitution Unveiled in Georgia's Capital City

A Georgian-language copy of Užupis Constitution has been unveiled in the Vilnius Square in Tbilisi this Wednesday. The plate of organic glass will be exhibited on a specially erected wall, which in the future will be decorated with artifacts made by Georgian and Lithuanian artists.

Lithuanian Minister of Health Raimondas Šukys, who himself is a resident of the Užupis district in Vilnius, as well as Georgia's Minister of Health Andria Urushadze, attended the opening ceremony on Wednesday. They were greeted by the citizens and the guests of Tbilisi, including the local Lithuanian community.

The idea to replicate Užupis Constitution in the capital of Georgia belongs to a Lithuanian artist and photographer Marius Abramavičius Neboisia. His idea was supported and implemented by Lithuanian Embassy, Tbilisi Government, and Lithuanian companies operating in Georgia.

“I am delighted that the

Vilnius Square
, which celebrates its second anniversary today, has become such an attractive and a beautiful place. We will do our outmost to make it even nicer, so that the future generations would be amazed by the rich and indelible traces of our friendship found here,” Lithuanian Ambassador to Georgia Jonas Paslauskas said at the opening ceremony.

The
Vilnius Square
in Tbilisi was opened on 23 June 2009, with the participation of Lithuanian and Georgian presidents.

Užupis Constitution is already the fourth Lithuanian project implemented in this historical part of Tbilisi. Last year, a Stone of Miracle by Gitenis Umbrasas was laid in the pavement of the
Vilnius Square
, preceded by a photo exhibition of Tomas Kauneckas’s works. Free wireless internet is available in the square since March 2010.

Georgia is still struggling to have one of the squares of Vilnius named after Tbilisi.
