Voters Tend To Support Opposition Parties As The Local Elections Approach

Lithuanian voters are likely to vote for the opposition parties in the upcoming municipal elections on February 27th, an opinion poll has revealed. The poll was conducted on 13 to 23 of January by Vilmorus public opinion and market research center. If the elections took place today, the Social Democrats, the Labor Party and the Party “Order and Justice” would garner the majority of the votes. They would collect 12.4%, 11.4% and 9.6% respectively.

The ruling Homeland Union-Christian Democratic Party would gather 8.2%, the Liberal and Center Union – 3.0% of the total vote.

The Christian Party rating stands at 1.3%. Other parties would collect less than 1%.

This year independent candidates will be for the first time allowed to run in the municipal elections. 14.3% of the voters have said they are ready to support them.

13.1% of the respondents have indicated that they will not participate in elections. Meanwhile, 17.9% are not determined yet for whom they are going to vote.

Local elections in Lithuania will be held for the sixth time since 1991. 23 political parties and more than 500 independent candidates will be competing for almost 15,000 seats in 60 municipalities.

It is considered that these local elections should indicate how the political parties may perform in the upcoming 2012 parliamentary elections.
